Supporting Preprints in Psychology: PsyArXiv

PsyArXiv provides access to the latest research in psychology for free. Established in 2016, PsyArXiv serves the psychological science community just as bioRxiv and arXiv serve the disciplines of biology, physics, mathematics, computer science, and related fields. Despite its short history, PsyArXiv has been widely embraced among psychological researchers. The service is already receiving an average of more than 16 new manuscript submissions per day and download rates are now more than 5,000 per day. These usage rates indicate clear demand among consumers of psychological research to access papers more quickly and at lower cost than papers available through publisher-controlled outlets (proprietary academic journals).

Although the service is (and always will be) free to end users, it is not free to run. Specifically, SIPS incurs costs on an annual basis for the technology to host the service, which includes things like user technical support and DOI minting. PsyArXiv is financially supported by institutional members (mainly libraries), but we also accept donations from individuals.

How to donate: Donors can give directly at http://paypal.com/us/fundraiser/charity/2825932. Donations to this fund should end in $0.07 (e.g., $100.07). Donors who wish to give via check or bank transfer can write to sips@improvingpsych.org for more information. For U.S. donors, SIPS (EIN: 82-1971527) is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit with the IRS.

Diversity Travel Fund

The Society for Improvement of Psychological Science (SIPS) is excited to announce the establishment of a fundraising campaign for the SIPS Diversity Travel Fund, aimed at making participation at SIPS conferences accessible to all researchers. Beginning in 2020, SIPS will provide financial support for awardees to attend SIPS’ annual conference.

The SIPS Diversity Travel Fund supports an important part of SIPS’ mission to “conduct outreach within and outside psychology to achieve a broad, diverse, and inclusive community working on improving cultural and personal research practices.”

Applications for the SIPS Diversity Travel Fund are open to people at all career stages who are underrepresented in science. This includes, but is not limited to, identifying with an underrepresented group or groups with regard to race/ethnicity, gender, (dis)ability, socioeconomic class, sexual orientation, and/or college status (e.g., first generation, returning student). Applications are also encouraged from people who reside and work outside the United States, Europe, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia.

Seed funding for this campaign comes from a $1,000 donation from a team who was awarded a prize in the Center for Open Science Pre-Registration Challenge. We hope that other research groups might follow their lead by directing surplus funds to this campaign, whether from the pre-registration challenge or other sources. Donations of any size are welcome!

How to donate: Donors can give directly at http://paypal.com/us/fundraiser/charity/2825932. Donations to this fund should end in $0.03 (e.g., $100.03). Donors who wish to give via check or bank transfer can write to sips@improvingpsych.org for more information. Student/Postdoc Travel Fund

SIPS has made a limited number of funds available for student and postdoc travel support. This fund supports defraying student and postdoc travel costs to the SIPS Annual Meeting for individuals who do not have access to other funds. In addition to SIPS dues, this fund is supported by donations. Matching funds from two generous donors in 2018 helped provide support for 25 early career researchers, and a crowdfunding campaign will support attendees in 2019. Donations are being accepted now for SIPS 2020.

How to donate: Donors can give directly at http://paypal.com/us/fundraiser/charity/2825932. Donations to this fund should end in $0.05 (e.g., $100.05). Donors who wish to give via check or bank transfer can write to sips@improvingpsych.org for more information. For U.S. donors, SIPS (EIN: 82-1971527) is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit with the IRS.
